Night Shade
"Your eyes feel pretty weird...”
Night Shade is a wolf Raytraxian. It is the Blackout variant of Shade.
It has a similar appearance to Fed, Shade and Jammer, having grey fur with a light grey neck fluff, underbelly, paws, and ear tufts. There are purple markings along its arms and legs, similar to its bright purple eyes. It usually wears a pair of purple glowing shutter shades. In their VIP variant, its eyes, markings and shutter shades instead have an orange/golden coloration.
Abilities
Increased Health (Passive)
Night Shade has slightly increased health from other Raytraxians, at 110 HP.
Shutter Shade Drop (Death)
Like its counterparts, Night Shade will drop its shutter shades upon death. However, humans wearing a Hazmat Suit cannot pick up the shutter shades, saving them from the infection.
Bounty/Boost (VIP Only)
VIP Night Shades can be killed for 100 Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination immediately after they spawn. For each second that the VIP is alive, an additional 1 Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination is added to their total worth.
Moreover, VIP Night Shade will apply a 1.5x Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination multiplier to itself and nearby Raytraxians within a limited range, awarding them with extra credits per each infect.
Boombox (VIP Only)
Exclusive to its VIP variant, it will have a Boombox in its inventory upon infection. Though completely cosmetic, it is capable of playing music, this music being "JAMS VIP".
Acquirement
Night Shade can be acquired by walking over or obtaining purple shutter shades during Blackouts, or infection by another Night Shade Raytraxian, although you won't have the shutter shades. It takes about 20 seconds to be infected after putting on the shutter shades.
There is a 1/30 (3.3%) chance of becoming its VIP variant. This chance becomes more likely depending on your Kill Streak, maxing out at a 1/2 chance at 60 kills.
When wearing the shutter shades, the following text will pop up:
- "Your eyes feel pretty weird..."
- "Goofy.."

Trivia
- When a Raytraxian knocks the shutter shades off your head, the text "The silly glasses were knocked off your head!" would pop up.
- The Night Shade's low HP face was modified on V3.1.
- The music that used to play on VIP Night Shade's boombox was Aging, composed by Fishcracks.
- As of now, the track has been removed and replaced with JAMS VIP due to pressure from the community to upload Aging as an official track, and the composer disliking the music as a whole.
- Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to get a VIP Night Shade from dropped shutter shades, even if its from another VIP, and outside of Blackouts. It remains at the same chance of 1/30.
- The removed Stare tool is a reference to The Rock's Eyebrow Raise (LOUD WARNING) meme.
- While performing certain Emotes & Emojis while having the Boombox, Night Shade will play a muffled version of a pre-existing song for that emote:
- Doing the Smug emote plays "Transit" by Fishcracks.
- Doing the California emote plays an 8-bit remix of the song "California Gurls" by Fishcracks.
- If you use the Overseer machete skin and kill a Night Shade that has its shutter shades, it will turn invisible, making it act as an invisible "landmine".
- This applies to other Raytraxians that also drop a transmogrifying item after death.
- This also happens with the "Batsaber" and "Overseen" bat skins.
- Oddly, this is one of the Raytraxians to lack a Bestiary description.
- Night Shade is one of the few Raytraxians to have a unique idle animation, being the same as Shade.
Bugs
- There was a minor bug in which Night Shade's death face did not show upon dying, instead showing its low HP face.
- Similarly to the VIP Jammer animation bug, users were able to replicate VIP Night Shade's Boombox animation by typing the command
/e shadejamming
into the chat. - Moving while doing the Smug emote will cause the Boombox notes to still appear.
- There is a bug that quickly lessens the stare cooldown by equipping grab then equipping stare once more.
- An existing bug allows players to obtain the shutter shades without a Blackout active. When a survivor wearing a pair of Shade glasses is hit with "Attack", the shades are knocked off and transformed into Night Shade's shutter shades.
